  • Nestled atop quaint and cobblestoned Main Street in Nantucket’s Downtown Historic District, the legendary Murray’s Toggery Shop officially opened in 1945 — but its roots can be traced back further: the location was first founded by R. H. Macy as a dry goods store in 1843 before eventually becoming a toggery shop in 1916, providing locals with essentials like footwear, waders, hunting clothes and foul weather gear. In the 1960s, Murray’s introduced their iconic “Nantucket Reds” canvas: a durable, dusty reddish fabric that’s “guaranteed to fade” and has since come to define the island’s aesthetic identity. Today, the shop still proudly anchors both the north end of Main Street and the Nantucket community at large.
