The extinct, flightless bird has since come to represent obsolescence and ineffectuality, and has been featured in everything from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to Hilaire Belloc’s Bad Child’s Book of Beasts (from 1896):

    The Dodo used to walk around,
    And take the sun and air.
