Gyles & George is, according to Gyles himself, “British knitwear with a sense of humour, designed to make people smile.”
In the early 1980s, Gyles Brandreth and George Hostler teamed up to create a range of original jumpers featuring bright colors, droll phrases, visual puns, and trompe l’oeil images. Over the years, the pair designed hundreds of individual “wit knits” — many of which were worn by contemporary luminaries like Elton John and Diana, Princess of Wales, who popularized the now-iconic “I’m a Luxury” sweater — and produced four books featuring their charmingly cheeky and colorful patterns.
“Diana, Princess of Wales was a regular customer at the boutique in Kensington Church Street,” explains Gyles. “Her favourite jumper was the one that says ‘I’m a Luxury’ on the front and ‘...Few Can Afford’ on the back. When I saw a photo of the princess in the jumper, pushing her boys on a swing, I thought: ‘This is unreal.’ When I met Diana at a reception at the House of Commons in the early 1990s and she said: ‘Look, I’m always wearing you!’ I thought: ‘This is beyond unreal.’”
