Field Guide of Birds of the West Indies by James Bond, Fourth EditionVintage Book
Besides being a lush, beautifully designed volume, The Field Guide of Birds of the West Indies is a collectors' item principally because its author - the ornithologist James Bond - was the namesake for Ian Fleming's famous fictional character. Fleming became familiar with Bond's work during his time at Goldeneye, Jamaica, and later explained of his inspiration: "I wanted the simplest, dullest, plainest-sounding name I could find, and 'James Bond' was much better than something more interesting, like 'Peregrine Carruthers.' Exotic things would happen to and around him, but he would be a neutral figure — an anonymous, blunt instrument wielded by a government department." Fourth Edition, 1980.
