Notes

Every student at St. Paul’s School, regardless of whether he or she plans to row, is a signed to one of two boat clubs upon arrival as a freshman: Halcyon or Shattuck.

From their first race in 1871, the two clubs have enjoyed a fierce and celebrated rivalry. For decades, in fact, St. Paul’s did not compete at all in interscholastic regattas, focusing instead on the all-important intramural boat races between Halcyon and Shattuck. So great was this rivalry that even when the school’s oarsmen did start participating in the New England championships, they raced as two separate clubs (Shattuck took both gold and silver in 1955, and Halcyon won in 1966).

When the school finally began racing as a unified team, putting all of its best rowers into a single crews for the championship races, St. Paul’s dominated, winning fifteen New England championships in thirty-one years.

The Halcyon and Shattuck boat races are still held annually, and alumni and current students, sporting the ties, boater hats, and blazers of their respective clubs, turn out in droves.

To this day, the school has no rowing jacket of its own, and when St. Paul’s won the Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley in 2004, the victorious crew accepted their trophy as a motley mixture of blue Shattuck and red Halcyon club blazers.
