  • This is a replica of South Africa's 1906-1907 tour jersey, the one that earned them the nickname, the Springboks. In 1994, in the spirit of change and new beginnings, the African National Congress government voted to replace the springbok as the nation's sporting emblem with the king protea flower. But President Nelson Mandela famously intervened to allow the rugby team to retain its springbok badge. The very next year, newly democratic South Africa hosted the rugby World Cup. In one of the nation's greatest sporting moments, South Africa won, and Mandela, dressed in a Springboks jersey, presented the trophy to team captain Francois Pienaar.
