Provenance

"The oldest pub in Oxford is The Bear Inn, a thirteenth-century institution where the walls and ceiling are covered in swatches of club, academic and regimental neckties.  If you go into The Bear wearing a club tie that does not already grace their establishment, you may have a piece of the tie snipped off with scissors in return for a half-pint of beer.  The embroidery on some of the vintage ties in The Bear is stunning, and many of their motifs are at once whimsical, cryptic, and captivating.  One tie that caught my eye was that of the Old Boys association of the St. Bartholomew's Hospital Boat Club ("The Hippo Club"), which showed a hippo rising out of the water on a wooly blue background.  I thought about other creatures that might rise out of the water, and my mind wandered to classical mythology and to the sirens: beautiful women whose sweet songs lured sailors off course." - Jack
