According to legend, the game of rugby originated at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England during a football match in 1823, when one of the players caught the ball and simply ran with it in his arms to the opposing goal. Thomas Arnold, the school’s then-headmaster, noted the young man’s “fine disregard for the rules”, and a new sport was born. Arnold subsequently organized two competing sides: “School House” (for the boarders) and “Town” (for the day students); the School House’s shirt, thought to be the world’s first rugby jersey, featured an embroidered skull-and-bones motif - perhaps in reference to the more violent nature of the school’s particular brand of football.
