Unique in the world of heraldry, this pensive skeleton “seated upon a mossy stone” features prominently in the city of Derry (officially known as Londonderry)’s coat of arms. The motif dates back to at least the seventeenth century, and many theories about its possible meaning — including that it represents a Norman knight who was starved to death in the local castle’s dungeons — remain unverified.
