Provenance
The custom of the wooden spoon dates back to the late 18th century at The University of Cambridge. The light-hearted award was given to the student who received the lowest exam marks but still earned an honours degree in mathematics. From 1910 onward, however, the exam results were given in alphabetical order rather than score order, so it was impossible to tell who had the lowest score. The last wooden spoon, pictured here, was presented to Cuthbert Lempriere Holthouse, an oarsman of the Lady Margaret Boat Club, home of the original blazer. The last spoon’s handle is shaped like an oar and is inscribed with a Greek epigram that translates as "In Honours Mathematical, This is the very last of all The Wooden Spoons which you see here; O you who see it, shed a tear."
