Notes

Large Oar trophy won by Royal Marine A. J. Blackburn. These oars were awarded as presentation trophies for boat races in the army and navy in England. Made of sterling silver, this size is particularly rare and beautifully made. Mne Blackburn won this for being aboard a Cutter sailing vessel race along with his fellow marines. This Inter-Part is assumed to relate to the fact that this race was just between the Royal Marines regiment. The Marine was a sailor on board H.M.S Sussex, and it was presented to him in 1933. Having three of these oars presented to an obviously highly skilled, brave and talented sailor is a wonderful part of the decoration of a member of the English armed forces before WW2. Curated by Foundwell.
